We all know that starting a new fitness journey can be challenging, and before we know it, the journey ends. Building new and healthy habits take work, especially if the old comfortable (not always healthy) patterns are right around the corner, waiting for you to give in, which results in us feeling discouraged and like a failure.

Here are a few tips that help me stay disciplined when starting a new habit.

1. Start slow and gradually increase
We tend to overcommit when building new habits, and our thoughts of a complete lifestyle change, strict rules, and unrealistic expectations often lead to our downfall. In doing this, we are setting ourselves up for failure, and it's just a matter of time before we procrastinate and eventually give up. Starting with the bare minimum allows you to nurture and grow the habit. It enables you to get used to the change before you commit to more.

2. Focus on consistency and not results
Aristotle said: "We are what we repeatedly do." one of the most critical parts of building healthy habits is consistency. We can easily fall into the habit of making excuses or giving up. Yes, this, too, is a habit. You are what you repeatedly do, so constantly choosing not to compromise on your goals will build a practice and result in your shaping your character. Instead, make small commitments and stay consistent with growing your habit; results will follow your consistency.

3. Set goals
"If you don't know where you are going, you will probably end up somewhere else." – Lawrence J. Peter.
It's as simple as that; we need a clear vision of where we are heading to remember why we commit to maintaining the habit. I use goal-setting to break my vision down into digestible parts. Being reminded of my goals drives me to be consistent in my habits. When setting goals, try and form an emotional connection. We commit better to goals that move our hearts and inner being. Give meaning to your intent.

4. Stay accountable
Speaking to people about goals and habits helps us stay determined. If possible, schedule a weekly check-in with a friend, coach, or family member. At Prime, we have weekly meetings with our clients; this helps us readjust their weekly commitments if needed to align with their vision and keep them accountable. You can also surround yourself with like-minded people; working alongside someone with the same goal will yield better results. Proverbs 27:17  "As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another"

5. Be patient and have grace with yourself.
The journey is bumpy at the end of the day, and there will be hiccups, and we should not be surprised when we fall short of our expectations. However, it is our response to falling short that matters. Accepting that we are not perfect and frequently fall short allows us to receive grace, giving us another opportunity.
